Subject Description
This subject is part of the "Global Science Studies" component of the International Bachelor of Science Honours degree and will be run by the University of Colorado (Boulder). The principal methodology of the class will be case-study analyses of some important global topics which have important bioethical dimensions. Topics may include genetically modified foods, modern medical treatments which clash with traditional customs, buying and selling human 'parts', and genetic screening programs.


Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. have enhanced their critical analysis skills through civil, effective argumentation,
2. be aware of some real, present-day ethical dilemmas presented by modern biological tools and a global perspective,
3. have improved their standing as educated citizens who will have to deal with these ethical dilemmas legally, politically and perhaps personally,
4. have sharpened their skills in verbal discourse, discussion and argument,
5. have gained a deeper appreciation of perspectives from multiple countries, and
6. enjoy the intellectual challenges of modern day bioethical dilemmas.
