Subject Description
The generation and storage of metabolic energy. The major catabolic pathways. The biosynthesis of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleotides. The regulation of enzymes and of metabolic pathways and their role in cellular function. The integration of metabolism including metabolic disorders.

Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. Identify the major biochemical processes that generate and utilise free energy in animals and plants and explain how some of these are regulated and integrated, recognising how chemical free energy is stored;
2. Compare anabolic (biosynthetic) and catabolic (degradative) metabolic pathways and recognise their significance in providing biochemical building blocks and energy, respectively;
3. Describe the principles involved in the control of metabolism;
4. Integrate knowledge gained in BIOL213 of the structure and function of molecules, especially proteins and carbohydrates, to the roles of these molecules in metabolic biochemistry;
5. Demonstrate ability to perform basic laboratory procedures used in the study of metabolism and relate these procedures and their results to the theoretical knowledge they have gained, demonstrating a concern for accuracy;
6. Employ knowledge of metabolism and of biochemical methods to design experimental approaches to simple problems in metabolic biochemistry;
7. Demonstrate appreciation of the historical process that led to this body of knowledge and identify methods used;
8. Demonstrate ability to relate metabolic processes to the functioning of whole organisms.

Practical classes begin in July. Log on to SOLS to select your preferred practical time in July. Students are expected to attend the corresponding tutorial. Please note, in some years the third tutorial class does not run. NOTE: The use of animals, animal tissues or animal-derived products (such as sera) is inherent and unavoidable, in order to achieve specific learning objectives. Students with conscientious objections to that use should not enrol in this subject.
