Subject Description
This subject will provide an overview of fisheries biology and aquaculture (vertebrate and invertebrate) including: the diversity of Australian and international fisheries and their key challenges; relevant ecological issues (population dynamics, transport processes, stock identification); predictive modelling, fisheries management; secondary impacts of fisheries; the diversity of aquaculture; case studies in aquaculture; ecological impacts, potential for enhancement of fisheries.

Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge of the diversity of fisheries and aquaculture in Australia and overseas;
2. An understanding of the factors (physical and biotic) regulating fisheries populations and fisheries and aquaculture;
3. Knowledge of the basis of fisheries management and ability to construct simple predictive models;
4. An understanding of the potential roles of biological research in aquaculture (diseases, nutrition, parasitology, etc.);
5. Knowledge of the diversity and research needs of local fisheries and aquaculture;
6. Knowledge of fish harvesting techniques and selected research methods;
7. conduct ecological surveys of fisheries habitat, identify fish species and conduct effective library research;
8. An understanding of the accuracy, precision, honesty, for the organisms under study, and for the safety and welfare of others in the laboratory or field (OH & S awareness);
9. Knowledge of the use of computers for data analysis and graphical presentation;
10. An ability to critically evaluate information sources;
11. An ability to communicate through written and oral reports.

There is a tutorial at the prac. time in Week 1. NOTE: The use of animals, animal tissues or animal-derived products (such as sera) is inherent and unavoidable, in order to achieve specific learning objectives. Students with conscientious objections to that use should not enrol in this subject.
