Subject Description
This subject explores key aspects of contemporary national and transnational graphic design theory, research and practice. The subject directs students to develop their own research within specific historical and theoretical frameworks via a base method of triangulation involving preliminary data comparison and critical analysis across three different fields of knowledge and information collation: 1. Technology and techniques used in the graphic design practice. 2. Theory and history informing a thorough understanding of visual communication in social, political and cultural context. 3. Data collection and interpretation that measures the effectiveness of graphic design practice and its reception by clients and end users/audiences/viewers using techniques drawn from applied semiotics, ethnography, sociology, psychology and market research among others. As opportunity permits, guest designers and industry representatives will lead discussion on relevant design issues.

Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. Initiate research projects that show evidence of theoretical relevance, critical analysis and developed visual communications methodologies pertinent to a graphic design project development and its documentation.
2. Develop presentation skills to a professional level.
3. Structure and write a focused project report that shows an understanding of research techniques, reviewing literature, in-text referencing, and constructing a bibliography.
4. Be prepared for entry into advanced graphic design and visual communications professional practice.
