Subject Description
This subject introduces students to the fundamentals of data communications and computer networks. Topics covered include: different types of data and the history of data communications; signals; modulation and multiplexing, switching and routing, network architectures: LANs, WANs and the Internet; Internet services and protocols; and emerging topics. The subject explains computer networking models that interconnect diverse communication systems, including the ISO reference model and the TCP/IP protocol Suite.


Subject Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1. Describe the main technologies, models and protocols used in data communications and networking
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the layered computer networking models
3. Select appropriate networking and communications technologies for a variety of different contexts
4. Gather and evaluate information about commercially available communications and networking services
5. Work as part of a team to design a small business network
6. Incorporate professional practices and standards
